This is a fictional test site. Example Company is not a real business — all content (team, customers, pricing, claims) is fabricated for software testing.

Our story

From a Friday-afternoon side project to the synthetic data platform trusted by Fortune 500 engineering teams.

2019

Founded in a Mission District garage

Alice Example and Bob Sample, both former data engineers at Acme Corp, prototyped the first version of Example over a weekend. Their goal: make it as easy to seed a database as it is to spin up a Docker container.

2020

Seed round — $4.2M

Led by Placeholder Capital with participation from Mockingbird Ventures. Hired our first five engineers and shipped public beta of the CLI.

2021

First 100 paying customers

Crossed 100 paying customers including Northwind, Contoso, and Fabrikam. Launched the warehouse and BigQuery-style connectors.

2022

Series A — $22M

Led by Sample Partners. Opened a London office. Released the healthcare and financial services schema packs and signed our first three Enterprise contracts.

2023

Compliance program launched

Completed our first annual third-party security audit. Began offering regulated-industry deployments for healthcare customers. Shipped the differential-privacy generation mode.

2024

Series B — $65M

Led by Mock Capital. Crossed 1,000 paying customers. Launched VPC deployment for Enterprise. Acquired Stochasticly, a competing schema-inference startup, for $11M.

2025

Government-authorized deployment

Cleared the authorization process for US federal government use. Signed contracts with three federal agencies and a classified program office. Crossed $40M in ARR.

2026

Today

175 employees across San Francisco, London, and Singapore. 1,400+ customers. Building toward our north-star metric: making it boring to populate any environment with realistic data.

Our mission and values

What we believe about the work we do.

Privacy is a feature, not a feature flag

We started Example because anonymization is a fundamentally weak guarantee. Synthetic data lets teams move fast without trading away their users' trust.

Determinism over magic

The same seed should always produce the same data. Reproducibility is more valuable than novelty, especially in tests and CI.

Ship the boring parts

Most engineering time gets eaten by undifferentiated plumbing. We build the boring parts of data infrastructure so our customers can focus on what makes their product unique.
